Given its history, the field of engineering we are focusing on can be defined as the discipline responsible for designing works that help in the utilization of water. Additionally, it involves the construction and maintenance of hydraulic infrastructure. 

Branches of Hydraulic Engineering 

Hydraulic engineering is essential for the optimal management and utilization of water resources. As mentioned, it is required in various areas. For this reason, it is divided into several branches. Here, we specify which ones: 

  • Hydrology: This focuses on the natural area, specifically on the formation and natural circulation of water. One of the goals of hydrology is to predict potential floods and future flows. 
  • Fluvial Hydraulics: This branch includes river engineering, as it involves studying the behavior of rivers. This allows for the design of structures that contribute to flood control and protection against floods. 
  • Urban Hydraulics: This branch manages and designs all hydraulic structures required in cities. It includes sewer systems, potable water supply systems, and stormwater drainage systems
  • Agricultural Hydraulics: Work in this branch develops drainage and irrigation systems. The goal is to ensure efficient water use and optimize agricultural production. 
  • Marine and Coastal Hydraulics: As the name suggests, this branch focuses on coastal and marine environments. It involves systems and structures that help manage and utilize water resources in these areas.
